7 Best Field Dressing Kit for Hunting 2022

We cannot discuss American history without considering the role of hunting. Hunting has been a major part of Native American culture. At that time the animals not only provided humans with food but also with heat, clothing, tools, and even shelter. As a hunter, you know that one of our most important tasks is field dressing.

That time ago, the skinning process of a game used to be an unpleasant task for many. As the technology and equipment became advanced, skinning and field dressing kits came into existence. Now in the 21st century, we have a variety of field dressing kits and brands to choose the one that suits us better.

1. GVDV Field Dressing Knife Kit (Recommend to Buy)

GVDV Field Dressing Knife Kit

Key Features

  • Three Set of Knives: Gut Hook, Caping, and Boning
  • 5cr15 stainless steel blade
  • Ergonomic Non-slippery handle
  • Ribcage Spreader
  • Compact hard plastic case
  • Game Cleaning Gloves

  • Anti-freeze, anti-skid, and antibacterial handle
  • Gut hook at the back
  • Supreme quality stainless steel construction
  • Easy skinning of the prey

  • Poor quality case
  • Wiggly handles

GVDV field dressing kit comes with a ripper, boning knife, fillet knife, chest dilator, and gloves. The blades are made with 5cr15 stainless steel which is abrasion-resistant and highly durable. The steel of the blades is quite hard and remains sharp for a long period of time. I liked the gut hook skinner knife the most. The small hook easily opens the abdomen of animals like hogs, deer, and bucks, without slicing into the muscle. I will recommend you clean the blades with the help of a dry cloth to avoid corrosion on the blade surface.

It has a recessed polypropylene handle that remains well protected even in wet conditions and gives you a good grip. If you drop it somewhere in the wild then it is a bit challenging to find because of its camouflage color. However, that is not a big issue because you get a case to store the knives.

The case also includes plastic gloves and ribcage spreaders made with steel. It helps to open rib cages for easier field dressing and faster cooling of fresh game meat. I will recommend this field dressing set for both beginner and seasoned hunters. Overall it is a very good product that will give you years of service. If you have a budget of around $40, I will suggest you buy this one, because it is cheaper and better than other expensive dressing kits.

2. MOSSY OAK Hunting Field Dressing Kit (Best Budget Kit)

MOSSY OAK Hunting Field Dressing Kit

  • Carbide V-Sharpener
  • Ergonomic Non-slippery handle
  • Wood & Bone Saw

  • Increased configuration for higher efficiency
  • Can be easily carried
  • The T-shaped handle allows easy cutting
  • Delivers surgical cutting precision

  • Only for beginners
  • It needs to be frequently sharpened

It comes with three full tang knives. The blade has 3CR13 stainless steel material, which is resistant to corrosion and wear. Each knife has the perfect weight and blade shape for the task that it is required to do. The gut hook works well to ensure no accidental puncturing of the gut. Moreover, the carbide V-Sharpener in the set allows you to resharpen the blades easily. I am very impressed with the bone saw, it is specially designed for cutting freezing meat and bones into smaller pieces

Knives have smooth ergonomic handles that ensure gripping while your hand is covered with blood. Moreover, the red-colored gloves make the grip stronger and keep your hands blood-free.

To make skinning easier, the field dressing kit has a stainless steel ribcage spreader. It helps to clean the game completely from the inside. This case is best suitable to process whitetail deer, pig, or elk. This is a great outdoor edge field dressing kit for those who are regular hunters. Overall it is a great product, a little heavy and bulky to carry around on a backpacking hunting trip. If you are looking for a dressing kit under $50, then MOSSY OAK is the best choice.

3. Outdoor Edge Game Processor Kit (Premium Quality)

  • 420J2 Stainless steel blades
  • Carbide sharpener
  • Rubberized Nonslip TPR Handles
  • Carving fork

  • Superior performance and edge retention
  • Amazing construction of efficient storage
  • Lifetime service

  • Compact structure
  • Shows signs of early rusting

Outdoor Edge field dressing kit has everything a hunter would ever need to process a game. This comes with four different types of knives: Gut Hook, Caping, Boning, and Butcher. The blades of knives are manufactured with 420J2 stainless steel which is corrosion resistant in salt-free atmospheres. Blades have a sharp bevel and edge for opening up the skin of a turkey, pig, or hog without putting much pressure. I am so fascinated with the butcher knife, it is broad and heavy enough to cut frozen and hard meat pieces flawlessly. Moreover, sharpening the blade is easier with the help of a carbide sharpener included in the kit.

Heavy black colored handles are made with a thermoplastic rubber material which provides balancing and great grip even in the slickest conditions. Moreover, the handles are shaped ergonomically to reduce hand fatigue after long periods of use. The case also includes a panel saw with big and small teeth to cut the game through the spine and primals respectively.

Overall, this kit makes deer and lamb butchering a breeze rather than a painful, back-breaking, and time-consuming task. Highly recommended kit for field butchering. Also, I will suggest this set for people who do a lot of home butchering. However, it is under a $70 budget which is expensive, but worth paying for extra dressing tools.

4. Maxam Mossberg Field Dressing Knife Kit (For Beginners)

Maxam Mossberg Field Dressing Knife Kit

  • Allows easy transportation
  • Ergonomic design

  • It might not be as sharp as you expect
  • Dull knives

Well,  the Maxam is a great field dressing kit for hunters and outdoorsmen. Comes with three knives to perform their dedicated tasks. Blades are prepared with 420 stainless steel that increases strength, and hardness, and resists corrosion. The gut hook knife is sharp out of the box. It has a finger hole where you can put pressure to cut underneath the skin easily. The razor-sharp small bevel opens a game like a zipper without cutting hair. Moreover, the blunt tip of the blade prevents punctured internal organs that can spoil fresh game meat.

The knife handles are formed with polypropylene material that is resistant to moisture. Handles have a safe grip design with small dots on them, which impressively give you a tough grip even in slippery conditions. Moreover, the bright orange color of the handle is visible from very far in the wild, which is an add-on for you.

To make your skinning work easier, the Maxam Mossberg hands you a stainless steel rib spreader. It is tough and heavy and ensures that you clean a game from the inside out. Overall, these knives are not full tang, but for the money, I think this set is very hard to beat. Once you take down the deer, elk, or moose, you are all ready to field dress your kill with this complete set of tools.  It is the best gift for your loved ones if they are active hunters.

5. Elk Ridge Field Dressing Knife Set (Strong Knife Material)

Elk Ridge Field Dressing Knife Set

Key Features

  • Two Set Of Knives: Guthook and caping
  • 3CR13 stainless steel blades
  • Nylon Fiber Handles
  • Nylon dual carry sheath

  • Rust free construction
  • Lasts for a prolonged period
  • Comfortable grip
  • It easily glides through the skin

  • Smaller than it appears
  • Cheap sheath quality

Elk Ridge is the largest wholesale knife manufacturer 1982 in the United States. This model of Elk Ridge is surely for pro and experienced hunters. Earlier I came across Buck 141 PakLite Field dressing knife Kit, but I was so impressed with the blade material and handle grip of the Elk ridge, so I chose this one to review. Both are almost under the same price range but there is a slight difference in quality and performance.

It is not a complete kit but two knives for instant and fast field dressing. The blade is constructed with 3CR13 stainless steel which is easy to resharpen and good corrosion-resistant. This trailing point skinning knife features a 3-1/2-inch razor-sharp blade which is quite long to get inside of the head and neck of an animal like a deer, turkey, or bear. The gut hook knife is quite impressive and designed to open the belly of a downed deer, elk, or other critters.

The Nylon Fiber Handles are impact-resistant and stable at high temperatures. Ergonomically designed handles give good grip and balance. The best thing, both are full tang knives that incorporate the most amount of steel into the handle. This avoids bending and makes knives long-lasting.

Overall, both knives work great, especially around the neck area of the deer where the meat tends to stick to the skin. The one recommendation is to invest in a pocket knife sharpener to take in the field with you. This hunting knife set is recommended for you if you already have prior experience in skinning a game.

6. Browning Field Dressing Kit (Lightweight)

Browning Field Dressing Kit

Key Features

  • 4 Set Of Knives: Serrated with gut hook, Caping, Boning, and Deep Skinning
  • 5Cr stainless steel blades
  • Synthetic handles
  • Fabric measuring tape
  • Enclosed-handle sharpener

  • Lightweight construction
  • The set includes a wide range of tools
  • Reasonably priced
  • Superior quality blades

  • Not so extra-ordinary
  • Cheap outer construction

Next on our list is a Browning field dressing kit which holds everything within a zippered nylon case and makes it easy to carry. The kit comes with a variety of knives for close detail and opening work. Blades are manufactured with 5Cr stainless steel blades which are fire, heat, and corrosion-resistant. If you will notice the deep skinning knife, it is razor-sharp to go deep inside of the belly of the game like elk and hog to remove the hide. Moreover, the blades are easy to clean because of stainless steel. They remain sharp for a long time, however, if you feel a need to resharpen the blade, the enclosed handle sharpener helps you to do that with proper gripping.

The knives have orange-colored synthetic handles which are highly solid and good at holding. At the same time, the dark orange color gives it better visibility at night or in a field with tall grass.  A guard is there on each knife’s handle to give balance and grip while you move them on the skin of a game. However, the handle of the double-cut bone saw is T-shaped to cut bone accurately in the desired size and pieces.

Overall,  this kit is ideal for both amateurs and experienced hunters. It is a great product that offers a good balance between quality and cost. The price of this skinning kit is around $50, which is quite cheaper compared to the quality of the product. This is the one that will give you an unforgettable outdoor and hunting experience.

7. Ruko RUK0131 Game Processing Set (Variety Knives)

Ruko RUK0131 Game Processing Set

Key Features

  • 5 Set Of Knives: Gut hook, filleting, caping, small and large game cleavers
  • 420A Stainless Steel Blades
  • Polypropylene handles
  • Heavy-duty game shears
  • Hard nylon case

  • The durable storage unit that secures the tools
  • Ideal for fishing enthusiasts
  • A plethora of utility
  • Sharpens very quickly

  • Knives could be sharper
  • Poor handle structure

Our next field dressing kit is a low-cost made-in-China product. Well, let me tell you if you are at the beginning of your hunting career then must take a look at this multifunctional kit. It has 5 sets of knives, which is the maximum number of knives on our list. The blades are made with 420A Stainless Steel which is resistant to freshwater, alkalis, air, and mild acids. However, exercising a lot of care is mandatory when handling it, because you may notice a few scratches on the blade surface as wear and tear takes its toll. I like the small knife with the rounded blade that is sharp all the way around. It is great for getting into tight spots when skinning.

The knives have polypropylene handles that provide high flexural strength and extra safety to use. However the tangs don’t go through the handles, the plastic handle feels a little uncomfortable in the hand. Once you start using it frequently, you get habitual and it works well actually.

You have no need to be stressed for not having the most appropriate tools, it contains almost everything. Also, the price is just around $60, which is worth paying to turn the hunting experience into the most pleasant moment. You will be a professional in a very short time with the help of these tools. Overall it is a good field dressing kit that allows you to save the cost of processing meat from shops. It is highly recommended for beginning-level hunters and butchers.

  1. As someone who is preparing to go white tail hunting for the first time in 20 years, I can really appreciate your thorough review of all these products!

  2. If price no object and I want to buy a set for my son and his father in law, both of whom are experienced deer hunters, what set is best?
